Wolf of Mibu Saitoh Hajime was a real, Japanese, historical figure--the captain of the 3rd Shinsengumi Unit. The attack that he is demonstrating was his favourite move, the "left single-handed thrust," in the style of the Shinsengumi's Hiratsuki ("Parallel Thrust"). And, as for those mysterious characters that most people won't be able to read, they say, "Aku, Soku, Zan," or "Swift Death to Evil." There is some debate as to whether that phrase was the personal slogan of Saitoh Hajime or the general motto of the Shinsengumi itself. Either way, Saitoh would have lived by it.
